Toronto Endorses Fossil Fuel Non-proliferation Treaty!

MobilizeTO, in co-operation with ClimateFast, Fridays4FutureTO, and other Toronto climate action groups conducted a successful campaign to obtain endorsement of Toronto City Council of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. More than 1000 Petitions were presented to City Hall and the resolution, presented by Michal Layton, and seconded by Shelly Carroll was adopted by a vote of 22-2 on July 15, 2021. A historic day for Toronto!

THE FOSSIL FUEL NON-PROLIFERATION TREATY (FFNPT) is a global initiative to halt the expansion and production of fossil fuels and to fast-track progress towards safer, more sustainable solutions. (See blog posts for more information on the Treaty and why it is urgently needed).

Toronto now joins Vancouver as the second Canadian city to endorse the Treaty as well as Barcelona, Los Angeles and a growing number of other municipalities. In addition to the endorsement the City of Toronto will also urge the Canadian
Government to begin negotiations for a global treaty.
